Wondering what baby toys to get when you go to the toy store?
Play is nothing more than the VERY important job of learning how the world works … and you thought those kids were just having fun, huh?
Choosing the best baby toys for your little ones…
After more years than I care to remember doing early learning play as a pediatric occupational therapist, this continues to remain in the #1 Spot! Why do I get so excited about this toy? It has all the best components for an infant-toddler mind to develop. Although 3 year olds will ask for this toy, the optimal age to get this for your little one is anywhere from 10-18 months.
Just what do kids learn as they play?
Balls, balls, balls … you know why babies (and therapists) love balls? They are easy to pay attention to. Even an easily distracted child will visually follow the path of ball, and where it goes and what happens when it gets there … bump, swerve, crash … Don’t you just love the noise they make?–O.K. I get it, you’re not thinking like a toddler, that’s my job
Why is this toy in the Number One #1 Spot ?
Seriously, this toy teaches cause and effect, which is my FAVORITE offering to a little someone, who is developing a sense of competency in the world. It teaches discrimination & classification (you already noticed the colors), tool use (very important thing to learn at one year). This toy holds an emerging attention span just long enough to teach a toddler that it’s worth waiting for more. It engages the instantaneous attention of a baby, and helps it transform to focus, which is a lot more functional for learning.
For the special needs population, and for a therapist’s magic trunk, this toy is a MUST HAVE.
When choosing baby toys don’t forget children learn about the world as they play. It develops their thinking skills and intelligence.
